Option 1: Noongar Arts Program Workshop at BRAG
11:00am | Silk Painting Workshop with artist Beverly Thomson Beverly is a Yamatji woman living on Wardandi Country. She is a multidisciplinary artist specialising in pottery, weaving and “dirty pot” eco-dyeing. She is known for combining different mediums in interesting ways. In this workshop Beverly will demonstrate some basic techniques of painting on silk and how to manage colours. Participants will paint their own beautiful silk scarf to take home. 11:45am | Tour of Roelands Village with Elder Les Wallam, Woolkabunning Kiaka Aboriginal Corporation Woolkabunning Kiaka Aboriginal Corporation’s main purpose is to provide opportunities for guests and visitors to Roelands to interact with and learn about the Roelands Mission story and Aboriginal cultural heritage. The property was originally a farm used also as a Mission to house children removed from families from across Western Australia. More information >> |

1:30pm | Paintings and Stories of Noongar Country with Rhona Wallam, Lera Bennell and Dawn Alone Learn about painting Noongar Country with sisters Rhona, Lera and Dawn. Rhona will demonstrate how to paint a Noongar landscape in the Carrolup style using watercolours. Participants will then be guided to paint their own. The sisters will share stories of growing up at Burekup Camp across the river from Roelands. The workshop will include a short film about Rhona and her artwork. Courtesy of the Noongar Arts Program |

9:05am | Misappropriation and Artist Membership – Update on the Artist Member Application Process, Indigenous Art Code Presenters: Amy Mukherjee, Savannah Travia-Dann, Ruby Alderton An evolving concern for many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists is the misappropriation of cultural knowledge by other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Artists increasingly contact IartC with concerns that their community’s cultural knowledge is being misappropriated and exploited. How can IartC better respond to the concerns artists raise with us? How can reviewing the artist membership criteria and application process respond to these concerns? |
