OUR FUTURE

ABORIGINAL ARTS WORKER TRAINING PROGRAM

The Our Future Aboriginal Arts Worker Training Program supports Aboriginal arts workers from regional and remote WA to build new skills and grow their knowledge of the arts sector.

In August, the part two of the 2024 program took place on Nyiyaparli Country (Newman) and was hosted by Martumili Artists. It was a busy week, with participants completing accredited training, skills workshops, a silk painting studio, as well as a series of photography workshops.

The program kicked off with accredited training delivered in partnership with North Metropolitan TAFE, facilitated by lecturer Jacky Cheng.

Kimberley-based photographer Michael Torres (Jalaru Photography) led photography mentoring, showing participants how to capture artwork, details, and headshots with best practice techniques. He also ran two workshops which focused on creating photographic art using neon lights and digital image layering techniques.

Participants also engaged in peer-to-peer learning, exchanging skills and cultural knowledge with other artists in the program.

They learned new skills like silk painting, exploring how to apply their creativity to a new medium. The program also covered practical skills such as workplace health and safety, artwork conservation, and archiving.

Martumili artists Corban Clause Williams and Owen John Bilijabu gave the group a tour of the Martumili gallery, providing insight into the current ‘Kujungka’ exhibition.

Participants included Julieanne Farmer and Henry Farmer (Tjarlirli and Kaltukatjara Art), Sylvia Wilson (Martumili Artists), Ruby Djikarra Alderton (Spinifex Hill Studio) and Rekeshia Goodwin (Spinifex Hill Studio).

Thanks to the Martumili staff for their support throughout the week!

The program is proudly supported by Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries through the Regional Arts and Cultural Investment Program and is delivered in partnership with North Metropolitan TAFE.
