15 Artists Engaged
5 Arts Workers
Facilitated by Tanya Lee and Robyn Lees
AACHWA spent a busy two weeks with the team from Mowanjum Arts focusing on ceramics as an art practice guided and mentored by ceramist Tanya Lee and raku ceramist Robyn Lees.
The group made up of 15 artists and 5 arts workers worked on extending their fundamental ceramic skills including, sourcing their own clay from a local swimming spot, stretching, piercing, slumping and carving the clay to form their own artworks.
Across the fortnight, the artists and arts workers worked in close collaboration with local Traditional Owners and the Dambi Rangers to source clay and build raku firing pits on Country at the art centre.
Raku is a special form of ceramic originating from Japan, the process sees the ceramic vessels and pieces fired in an open flame or fire pit rather than a kiln
This workshop acted as an extension from the group’s previous workshop at Mowanjum Arts in 2023.
Thank you to everyone at Mowanjum for sharing their creativity and culture with us.
Our Country Moves aims to strengthen the network of art centres across WA with targeted support across management, governance, training and creating new employment opportunities through art centres and art making.
