The March 2023 Our Future Aboriginal Arts Worker Training Program was held on Nyiyaparli Country, Newman with our hosts Martumili Artists.
Participants had a busy and highly productive 5 days at Martumili where they were on the tools installing a new exhibition ‘Ngapikaja’ (thingamibobs) curated by Sylvia Wilson.
The Our Future participants worked alongside Martumili arts workers Sylvia Wilson, Alysha Taylor and Corban Clause Williams (Our Future Alumni) where learnings from part one in Perth were strengthened and further developed through a combination of peer-to-peer learning and TAFE coursework delivered by program partner North Regional TAFE through arts professional/TAFE lecturer Jacky Cheng. Expert installation instructions and troubleshooting advise was provided by Jack Pam and Timo Kroker from professional arts management team Pam Perth.
Participants also spent time stretching and priming canvases, preparing paints, painting, learning about products and art licensing with Martumili manager Amy Mukherjee and completing a photography workshop with Perth-based photographer Jess Russell from @jessrussellmoves.
For this program there were 5 participants: Leonie Bennett & Jade Butler representing Tjarlirli and Kaltukatjara Art, Angelina Boona representing Kira Kiro, Marrika Gilla representing Ku’arlu Mangga and Dylan Kerley representing Yamaji Art.
The program is proudly supported by the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries (DLGSC) through the Regional Arts and Cultural Investment Program (RACIP) and is delivered in partnership with North Regional TAFE.
