17 Artists Engaged
5 Art Centres
Facilitated by Andy Quilty and Kate Leslie
AACHWA staff joined facilitators Andy Quilty and Kate Leslie in Halls Creek with Yarliyil Art Centre for a studio elevation workshop.
The workshop welcomed surrounding Kimberley artists and arts workers, with people traveling Kununurra, Balgo, Warmun and Fitzroy Crossing.
Across the week, artists and arts workers had the opportunity to explore different studio practices and processes including colour theories, canvas stretching, OHS best practices and packaging artwork for transit.
Day 1: Artists worked on colour theory, mixing warm and cool hues, signature colour development and the use of paint and tools to aid the painting process when in the studio.
Day 2: Led by facilitator Andy Quilty, the group worked on portraiture, blocking and shading, composition and layout as well as understanding depth and texture and how to apply that to their individual practice.
Day 3: The group visited sites including ‘China Wall’ and Caroline Pools where they worked on charcoal landscape drawings, mark making and painting with restricted palettes.
Day 4 & 5: Back in the studio, Kate Leslie led the group as artists worked on extending their individual styles, skill development and experimenting with different drying techniques and methods.
Towards the end of the week, the Yarliyil Arts Centre, the local community and artists invited the group to a local water hole where they painted the natural landforms and environment surrounding the Halls Creek area, supporting cultural storytelling and art making on Country.
